about me.

I’m Shelly B. Phillips, RN, BSN, BA, CMWC, MFA, a multi-disciplinary artist working across a variety of mediums, including photography, painting, sculpture, and performance. I approach each artwork with the right "suit" for the job—whether that means literally gearing up or immersing myself fully in the chosen method and materials.

I earned my Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Salve Regina University and my Bachelor of Art in Art Education from Bridgewater State University. Most recently, I completed my MFA in Visual Arts at Lesley University. I currently teach part-time at a local charter school, where I am constantly inspired by the spark of imagination and creativity in my students. Watching them realize the value of their time in the studio and in their journey is the true art of life, and it warms my heart to see them discover their talents.

As my practice evolves, so does my life’s journey. My shift from bedside work to the studio and classroom continues to center on healing through hands-on, process-based art. I see art as a verb—a way to engage with and tend to the broken systems around us. Inspired by thinkers like bell hooks and Tim Ingold, I believe creativity is key to transforming our world. When we intersect creativity with science, we create new paths forward.

My work is deeply influenced by my interests in immunology, the environment, and the role of education through visual arts and performance. I am especially fascinated by embodiment—how we connect with the world at a cellular level. We live in the world, not just on it, and I believe that art has the power to bridge groups and generations, not as separate pieces, but as a cohesive force—like a knot that binds everything together.

As a certified wellness coach, I also integrate health and wellness into my artistic practice. Now, as I transition to being a full-time artist, I am excited to engage in conversations about the intersections of art, science, and healing.
